There are more than 50 million smallholder farmers in Africa, most of whom are struggling to make a living due to lack of capital to improve their farming activities. Meanwhile, financial institutions are making loans to small businesses but less than 1% of those loans are to smallholder farmers creating a global funding gap of over $450 billion to agriculture. This is a needless tragedy for the farmers involved. On the other hand, the lenders do not have access to well-designed, affordable solutions to help identify and manage their risks, as traditional credit assessment tools used by these financial institutions are simply not built to work for smallholder farmers. As risk limits the activities of lenders, There is a limited access to credit for small holder farmers.
FarmDrive expands access to credit to underserved smallholder farmers by forever changing the economics of how we identify, profile, and underwrite credit to smallholder farmers who have been invisible to lenders until now. Smallholder farmers, sometimes need just $10 at the right time and this would lift them out of extreme poverty. The $10 would mean quality farm inputs at the planting season which translates to bumper harvests.
We make it possible for lenders to acquire pre-vetted smallholder clients in the knowledge that the risks of agricultural lending are being managed. The solution is a catalyst to reduce the financial and operational risks while increasing operational efficiency. Whether credit providers are seeking to better minimize their credit risk exposure, digitize their loan application processes, or streamline their new client outreach, the FarmDrive platform allows them to do so by using world-class algorithms, modern technology and an immense amount of data captured by the solution interfaces.
In 4 months, 837 farmers have been trained, signed up and are actively using FarmDrive. 60% of these farmers are women and youth who belong to farmer groups. Through the platform as well, 100 farmers have so far accessed credit in this time.
